“Promoting Youth Participation in Governance in Conflict Affected Areas in Jordan and Lebanon”

Youth during scoping of local service providers though a community mapping method in Jordon

ActionAid Arab Regional Initiative has launched a new project “Promoting Youth Participation in Governance in Conflict Affected Areas in Jordan and Lebanon”, (from March 2017 to end of Feb 2019, in partnership with The United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF).

The project aims to mobilize groups of talented young men and women in conflict affected communities to engage with local government, demand accountability from duty bearers, and facilitate democracy driven development at the grassroots level in targeted locations in Jordon and Lebanon.

Accountability requires the responsible use of power, and the project aims to empower those affected by the crisis, particularly young men and women to hold duty bearers both state and non-state actors accountable, through supporting those affected to establish community based accountability mechanisms.

The project seeks to achieve the following outcomes:

  1. Young people, women, and public servants have increased capacities in civic engagement and building community driven accountability mechanisms.
  2. The quality and accessibility of services provided by both government and emergency actors is enhanced through local level engagement of women and young people in dialogues with front-line service-providers.
  3. International and national humanitarian actors are mobilized to adapt accountability in emergency practices through local, national and regional platforms.

Over the past few years, ActionAid Arab Regional Initiative (AA ARI) has been working in Jordan, Lebanon to build the capacities of communities to respond to humanitarian emergencies and other crises that impact the region. This project is based on ActionAid ARI regional strategy (2013-2017), strategic objective 2 on harnessing the leadership of youth and women agents of change to demand accountability from duty bearers on youth specific issues and equality, access, equity, quality and gender responsiveness of public services.
