Fostering peace in a newly liberated Syria
Following the collapse of the Assad regime in Syria in early December 2024, ActionAid Arab Region (AAAR) stands with the Syrian people, who endured over 14 years of immense suffering and profound loss.
The liberation is a critical juncture which presents an opportunity for peace and rebuilding, but it demands a united commitment to safeguarding human rights and adhering to international humanitarian law.
While our local partners marked the profundity of the liberation for the people of Syria by handing out red roses, we continue to collaborate with them as they not only deliver vital assistance to the people who need it most, but also to amplify the voices of those who were impacted.
In the coming weeks and months, we urge all parties in Syria to take meaningful steps to grant independent humanitarian and human rights actors unrestricted access across the country. This includes ensuring safety, security and protection of civilians. These commitments must be transformed into concrete actions that uphold the rights and dignity of all Syrians, without discrimination.
During this delicate time, AAAR joins the calls for calm and, along with our local partners, stress the importance of avoiding violence. As people meet to assuage their pain, as hundreds of thousands return to their homes from camps of exile, as losses are mourned, and as hope, be it tentative or fervent, is nurtured, the priority must now be on addressing the needs of those affected, fostering reconciliation, and rebuilding a society based on equality, dignity, and respect for human rights.
We continue to support the Syrian people as they navigate the challenging but hopeful journey towards recovery and lasting peace.
